Young, curious and unusually relaxed about the whole thing — the easiest city in the state to arrive new and be made welcome.

Austin does not behave like the rest of Texas, and the kink scene is no exception. The University of Texas puts more than fifty thousand students in the middle of town, the tech industry keeps drawing in young workers from across the country, and the self-styled Live Music Capital of the World has decades of arts and music behind it — together they have made this the least closeted city in the state by a comfortable distance. It is a scene that turns over quickly — students graduate, tech workers move on — so it is perpetually full of people in their first year or two of the lifestyle, and it has got good at teaching the fundamentals because of it. The education side is strong, the munches are friendly, and 'I'm new' is a sentence people hear often and respond to well rather than with suspicion.

The one real constraint is I-35. The interstate splits Austin down the middle and jams up for most of the day, so distance here is measured in which side of it you're on as much as in miles. Work out the drive you'll actually face — not the straight line on the map — and put whoever falls within it at the top of your list.

Central & East Austin

The heart of the open scene. Downtown, East Austin and the neighborhoods around the UT campus are where the city skews youngest and most relaxed — the part of the city that treats all of this with the least ceremony.

Round Rock, Cedar Park & the north suburbs

North of the city up the I-35 and the 183. Round Rock, Cedar Park, Pflugerville and Georgetown, mostly in Williamson County, are fast-growing suburbs where a match up the road beats a crawl down I-35 into town.

South Austin, Buda & Kyle

The southern edge, heading toward San Antonio. South Austin keeps the city's relaxed character, and Buda, Kyle and the towns down the corridor increasingly draw people priced out of the center but still very much part of the scene.

San Marcos & the corridor

Halfway to San Antonio and shared by both cities. San Marcos brings another university crowd, and anyone living along this stretch is within reach of two scenes at once if they set their radius for it.

The Hill Country west

Out toward Dripping Springs, Lakeway and the Highland Lakes. Quieter and more scattered, with winding roads and long gaps between towns, so it pays to look further afield than you would in the city.
